Director / Chartered Architect / Certified Passivhaus Designer
Alan is the founding director of Eco Design Consultants, forming the company in 2008. As director Alan is involved in every project in the office sharing his skills as a chartered Architect, certified European Passivhaus Designer and Code for Sustainable Homes assessor.
With a life-long commitment to social and environmental sustainability, Alan has managed the Eco Design Team to develop the UK’s most air-tight house, Howe Park Passivhaus. Previously he has led on innovative projects such as the Sigma Home, the country’s first 5 Star house under the Code for Sustainable homes, and the 5 Star Greenhart Grove in Huntingdon with low embodied energy through its use of a contemporary straw bale system.
Alan acts as a consultant and lecturer to share his passion and knowledge of sustainability, passive design and future proofing. He currently lectures technology to the undergraduate architects at Birmingham City University, specialising in Environmental design. He has taught Architecture at the University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka under the auspice of VSO and spoken at various conferences including the Passivhaus annual conference.
Architect / Certified Passivhaus Designer
Hannah is an Architect and certified Passivhaus Designer, with experience working on large-scale Passivhaus, Passivhaus Plus and Zero Carbon projects across a variety of sectors.
With an interest in natural materials and their potential for creating beautiful, healthy spaces, she particularly enjoys the use of timber as a sustainable building material and has previously worked with the innovative Brettstapel construction method.
Her interests include cohousing, community engagement and the role of the built environment in social cohesion, which has led her to carry out research into the physical segregation of city centres and the impact of this on a sense of social inclusion.
Experienced in domestic, education and retrofit projects Hannah is currently working on an arts and crafts retrofit with aspirations to be off grid and an EnerPHit retrofit/extension influenced by feng shui.
Katie has refined her skills as an Architectural Assistant working with Architectural practices on projects ranging from masterplanning to educational facilities, conservation work and private housing, and from feasibility to on-site support.
She has become increasingly interested in Passivhaus and sustainable design, her master’s thesis examined how different building construction types can help to achieve an airtight building. This interest in sustainable design attracted her to Eco Design Consultants in 2015 when she joined the design team to assist with developing a Passivhaus cohousing scheme in Milton Keynes.
Since joining us Katie has worked on several individual and larger scale residential projects from feasibility stage through to working drawings and completion. She has also helped work on several publications for the NHBC foundation alongside Cutland Consulting. These publications include an important guide on the importance effect of the shape and form of building, for its energy demand– ‘The challenge of shape and form- understanding the benefits of efficient design’.
Business Development Director
Donna joined Eco Design Consultants full-time in 2013, bring with her an extensive range of management experience gained in the health sector; voluntary, statutory and corporate.
Her experience as a Specialist Practitioner in Community Health has seen her working with groups to identify needs and develop long-term action plans. She has utilized these assessment skills in an evaluation of registered tradespersons’ schemes and producing home user guides for housing associations.
Since joining Eco Design Consultants, Donna has been instrumental in the company achieving the quality marks ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in Quality Management and Environmental Management.
Hossein is currently on sabbatical, studying for a PhD researching how Passivhaus buildings cool during warmer temperatures. This builds on his MSc in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building. His passion has always been in achieving sustainability through design and detailing before applying on-site energy generation and he is keen to research the latest advancements in energy efficient technology.
Hossein also teaches as an Associate Lecturer on the current MSc Sustainable Building: Performance and Design course for the Low Carbon Building Technology and Modelling modules at Oxford Brookes University.
