CAREER:

Jan 2009 – Present Eco Design Consultants

As Proprietor I started Eco Design Consultants to provide a combination of sustainable architecture and environmental consultancy. Environmental and Ethical considerations are at the heart of the new company, including projects, management and procurement of stationary. Projects have included Architectural Revamping Newport Pagnell Museum, Site wide energy strategy report for 16 refurbished and extended flats in Bromley, Sustainability support for an Architect in Stevenage, Working drawings for a low energy house, Code for sustainable Homes and Eco Homes Assessments, Garden rooms and environmental extensions / refurbishments. A highlight has included designing one of the successful Bids of the TSB retro fit for the future completion, to reduce the total carbon footprint of a house by at least 80%. We are now involved with a new consortium to help provide smart metering technology to help reduce energy use in the home.

2003 – Dec 2008 PRP Architects, Milton Keynes

As an associate I have responsibility for a team of architects and environmental consultants. I co-ordinate the Milton Keynes office environmental services, including Eco homes, Code for sustainable homes assessments, SAP and NHER calculations and sustainability and renewable’s strategies. Other management responsibilities include learning & development.

Whilst with PRP I have designed various schemes, including; Broughton Square in Milton Keynes, which was one of the first large scale housing developments to achieve EcoHomes Excellent; the Bellway Homes submission for the 60K home competition; Redevelopment of a Brownfield site in Bethnal Green, with 112 flats and 45,000sq.ft of office space; and 53 Flats in Luton. I also led PRP’s wining PFI bid for a series of children’s homes and family centres throughout Hertfordshire.

I have worked closely with many timber frame manufactures; Kingspan, in helping produce a design and technical manual, which is soon to be published; Stewart Milne for the Sigma Home and a housing development in Basingstoke; and Eleco Timber frame for a concept house achieving a 3 star rating for the code of sustainable homes, without renewable’s. I helped develop the new digital design brief for Jepson Housing Association. I currently sit on the DAP (Digital Access Provision) forum which was recently established to achieve a step-change in the supply and integration of digital communication technologies within the UK built environment.

I was the design architect for Stewart Milne’s Sigma Home, a pair of houses on the Innovation Park at the BRE in Watford. This was the first to achieve the 5 star rating for the code for sustainable homes, achieving carbon neutrality in respect of heating, lighting and hot water. Features included open plan split level living protected by a sprinkler system, bathroom pods, solar lantern, ‘eco play’ grey water recycling, PV’s, solar thermal, wind turbines, whole house heating and ventilation including heat recovery, phase change materials.

I led PRP’s winning competition bid with Circle Anglia, to provide 29, Code for sustainable homes 5 star rated, affordable houses as a sustainability showcase for Huntingdon District Council. The project at Greenhart Grove off Mayfield Road, Huntingdon, are constructed using timber and lime render to provide contemporary homes that have a negative carbon footprint in terms of embodied energy. The project utilises passive design, MVHR, solar hot water and photo voltaic cells. We also hope the scheme will employ a green caretaker to challenge behaviours.

1999 – 2003 Forge Company, London

The Forge Company was a Design & Research Company specialising in providing sustainable design led factory manufactured light gauge steel-framed housing. As a director I was responsible for 12 of the 16 members of staff in the running of the drawing office. My role grew from producing details and framing drawings for various social housing projects, to project and office management. This included the design of the first structural bathroom pods used in the award winning Feilden Clegg Bradley’s & Peabody, Lille Road housing project. I project managed several projects, include 67 award wining houses at Basingstoke with HTA, another award wining complex mixed use scheme flats for the frail & elderly with PTE in Stockwell, south London. As project Architect I designed houses in Hackney and Basingstoke where we were able to develop the system and details further. The project in Basingstoke included the combination of completely fitted out kitchen and bathroom modules and insulated panels, to provide a cost effective, quick solution for Key workers.

With Forge I was responsible for commissioning and developing new software and systems to help produce the fabrication drawings more efficiently. I also sat on the Light gauge steel sub committee, producing robust details for Part E of the building regulations and the SCI’s Light steel framing group.
